Why Choose Hardwood Flooring?

Hardwood is one of the few flooring choices that actually increases in value over time — and can be renewed rather than replaced.

Durability That Lasts Generations

Properly installed and maintained hardwood floors routinely last 50–100 years. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, so scratches and worn traffic paths disappear instead of requiring a full replacement.

Adds Real Home Value

Real estate studies consistently show that hardwood flooring adds resale value to St. Louis homes. Buyers recognize the quality immediately, and hardwood is one of the most-searched features in home listings.

Can Always Be Refinished

Unlike carpet, LVP, or laminate, hardwood doesn’t get thrown away when it shows wear. Our refinishing crew can sand, re-stain, and re-coat existing hardwood to restore it completely — often for a fraction of replacement cost. Learn more about refinishing →

Timeless Aesthetic

Hardwood complements every interior style — traditional, modern farmhouse, contemporary, transitional. It never goes out of style and pairs naturally with virtually any wall color, cabinetry, or furniture.

Better Indoor Air Quality

Unlike carpet, hardwood doesn’t trap allergens, pet dander, or dust mites. For St. Louis families with allergies or asthma, hardwood is consistently recommended by allergists as the healthiest flooring choice.

Solid & Engineered Options

Solid hardwood is ideal above grade in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Engineered hardwood — real wood over a stable plywood core — handles Missouri’s humidity swings and works in spaces where solid wood can’t. See engineered hardwood →

Wood Species Available in St. Louis

We carry solid and engineered hardwood in all the species St. Louis homeowners love most, stocked and available in our High Ridge showroom.

Red & White Oak

The most popular hardwood species in St. Louis. Oak offers excellent hardness (Janka 1290), a pronounced grain that hides everyday wear, and takes stain beautifully — from natural and light whitewash to dark espresso and gray tones.

Maple

Hard maple (Janka 1450) is one of the toughest domestic species available. Its tight, subtle grain and nearly white base color create a clean, contemporary look. Ideal for kitchens and high-traffic areas.

Walnut

American black walnut delivers rich chocolate tones and a flowing grain that looks stunning in dining rooms and living spaces. A premium species with a naturally dark finish that requires no stain in most applications.

Hickory

The hardest domestic hardwood available (Janka 1820). Hickory’s dramatic grain variation and natural color contrast — creams to browns — give it a distinctive, rustic character that holds up in the busiest households.

Ash

Similar hardness to oak with a slightly more open grain and a lighter natural color. Ash takes light-to-medium stains exceptionally well and is a favorite for wide-plank looks in transitional and modern interiors.

Exotic Species

We also carry Brazilian cherry (Jatoba), acacia, tigerwood, and other exotics for homeowners looking for something truly distinctive. Ask our showroom team about current availability and lead times.

How Hardwood Installation Works at Kelly’s Flooring

A clear, predictable process — from the day you call to the day you walk on your finished floor.

1. In-Home Estimate

We come to you, measure every room, inspect the subfloor, and walk through your goals — species, width, finish, budget, and timeline. You get a detailed written estimate with no surprises.

2. Select Your Wood

Visit our High Ridge showroom to see species, widths, and stains in full-size samples. We’ll help you choose between solid and engineered based on your subfloor, floor level, and humidity exposure.

3. Acclimation

Hardwood must acclimate to your home’s temperature and humidity before installation. We deliver material in advance and allow proper acclimation time to prevent post-installation gapping or cupping.

4. Subfloor Prep

We inspect and address the subfloor first — leveling, squeaks, moisture testing, and any repairs. A flat, dry, structurally sound subfloor is the foundation of a hardwood floor that lasts decades.

5. Installation & Finishing

Boards are laid in the selected pattern, blind-nailed or glued depending on the substrate and species. If site-finishing is chosen, we sand, apply stain, and coat with durable polyurethane or oil finish on-site.

6. Cleanup & Walkthrough

We clean the job site thoroughly, install transitions and moldings, and walk every room with you. We answer care and maintenance questions before we leave so your floors stay beautiful for years.

Hardwood Flooring Questions Answered

Hardwood installation cost in St. Louis typically ranges from $8–$18 per square foot installed, including materials, subfloor prep, and labor. The final price depends on species, plank width, finish type (prefinished vs. site-finished), and subfloor condition. Solid hardwood is generally more affordable on materials but requires more labor for site-finishing if that route is chosen. Call (636) 677-5555 or submit the form above to get a written estimate for your specific project.
Most whole-room or whole-home hardwood installations take 1–3 days for the installation itself. If site-finishing (sanding, staining, and coating) is included, add 2–3 additional days for the finish to cure. Prefinished hardwood eliminates the finishing time, so floors can be walked on immediately after installation. We’ll give you a realistic project timeline during your estimate.
Solid hardwood cannot be glued or nailed directly to concrete because concrete moisture will cause the wood to cup and warp. However, engineered hardwood is specifically designed for concrete subfloors — its multi-layer plywood core resists moisture movement and can be glued down or floated over concrete. We test moisture levels in your slab before recommending any product for a concrete subfloor installation.
For domestic species, hickory is the hardest (Janka 1820), followed by hard maple (1450) and white oak (1360). For homes with dogs or heavy traffic, we typically recommend white oak or hickory. Brazilian cherry (Jatoba) and other exotic species are even harder but come at a premium price. Keep in mind that surface finish also plays a major role — aluminum oxide and titanium-reinforced factory finishes dramatically outperform oil finishes in scratch resistance.
Solid hardwood is all-wood from top to bottom and can be refinished many more times over its lifetime, making it the long-term choice for above-grade living spaces. Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core, making it dimensionally stable in Missouri’s humid summers — and suitable for basements, slab-on-grade, and radiant heat floors where solid wood would move too much. Both are real wood. The right choice depends on your floor level, subfloor, and how long you plan to stay in the home.
Yes. Our refinishing crew sands, restains, and recoats existing hardwood to restore it to like-new condition. Most solid hardwood floors can be refinished 5–8 times over their lifetime. We also repair damaged boards, fill gaps, and re-nail squeaky sections before refinishing. See our hardwood refinishing page →
