Luxury vinyl plank flooring installation in a St. Louis home

Why Luxury Vinyl Plank Is St. Louis's Most Popular Floor

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) have become the go-to flooring choice for St. Louis homeowners — and for good reason. It's 100% waterproof, scratch-resistant, dent-resistant, and looks remarkably like real hardwood or stone. Whether you're finishing a basement, refreshing a kitchen, or replacing carpet throughout the main floor, LVP delivers beauty and durability that holds up to kids, pets, and Missouri's humid summers.

At Kelly's Flooring, we've installed luxury vinyl plank in thousands of St. Louis homes since the category took off. We carry the top-performing waterproof LVP brands — COREtec, Shaw Floorté, Mohawk SolidTech, Mannington Adura, and more — and our installers know how to prep concrete subfloors, level uneven floors, and miter trim around tricky transitions. The result is a floor that looks great on day one and still looks great 15 years later.

LVP for Every Room in Your Home

Luxury vinyl plank is one of the few floors that works almost anywhere. Here's where we install it most in St. Louis homes.

Basement LVP

Waterproof LVP is the #1 choice for St. Louis basements. It handles humidity, occasional moisture, and concrete subfloors better than any other floor. Pair it with the right underlayment for warmth underfoot.

Kitchen LVP

Spills wipe up, dropped pans don't dent, and you get the wood-look you want without the worry. WPC and SPC cores stay flat and waterproof under heavy appliances.

Bathroom LVP & LVT

True waterproof construction means LVP and stone-look LVT belong in master baths, powder rooms, and laundry rooms. Tile-look planks give you the spa look without the cold or grout maintenance.

Whole Main Floor

Continuous LVP from entry to kitchen to family room creates a seamless, modern look — and skips the transitions between rooms. Wide-plank styles add a high-end designer feel.

Rentals & Flips

Property managers and flippers love LVP for its durability and tenant-friendly maintenance. We offer trade pricing and fast unit-turnover scheduling.

Commercial & Light Commercial

Heavy-wear LVT installs beautifully in offices, salons, retail, and waiting rooms. Commercial-grade wear layers shrug off rolling chairs and high foot traffic.

Luxury Vinyl Plank FAQs

Is luxury vinyl plank really waterproof?

Yes. True waterproof LVP uses a WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) core that won't swell, warp, or absorb water — even if you have a leak or a flood. The plank surface is also fully impermeable. That said, water can still get under the planks at the edges of a room, so always dry up standing water promptly.

Is LVP good for basements?

LVP is the #1 recommended flooring for basements in the St. Louis area. It handles concrete subfloors, humidity swings, and the occasional moisture event better than carpet, hardwood, or laminate. Most products install as a floating floor with a built-in or separate underlayment for warmth. See our basement flooring page for more.

How long does luxury vinyl plank flooring last?

Quality LVP from brands like COREtec, Shaw Floorté, and Mohawk SolidTech is designed to last 20–30 years in a residential setting, with most carrying lifetime residential warranties. The thickness of the wear layer (measured in mils) is the biggest factor — 12 mil and higher is ideal for busy homes with kids and pets.

What's the difference between LVP and laminate?

The biggest difference is water. LVP is 100% waterproof; laminate is not. Laminate uses a wood-fiber (HDF) core that swells if water gets in, while LVP uses a plastic-based core that's unaffected. LVP is also quieter and softer underfoot. Laminate typically has a slight edge in scratch resistance and can feel more like real wood in higher-end products. See our laminate flooring page for a comparison.

How much does LVP installation cost in St. Louis?

Installed luxury vinyl plank in the St. Louis area typically runs $5–$10 per square foot all-in (material + installation + old floor removal), depending on the brand, plank thickness, and subfloor prep needed. Premium LVP and complex layouts cost more; value-tier LVP with simple installs cost less. We always give you a written estimate with no hidden fees.

Can LVP be installed over existing tile or hardwood?

In many cases, yes. LVP can go over existing tile, hardwood, or vinyl as long as the existing floor is flat, structurally sound, and not damaged. We inspect during your estimate and recommend either floating over the existing floor or removing it based on the condition and final floor height.

Is LVP safe for pets and kids?

Yes. LVP is one of the most pet- and kid-friendly floors you can buy. The wear layer resists scratches from claws and toys, spills wipe up with a damp cloth, and most modern LVP is low-VOC and FloorScore certified for indoor air quality. Look for products with a 20 mil or higher wear layer for the most demanding households.
